RESEARCH Documentary

I did some research to get inspiration, and to get some insight into what the tattoo community goes through in the world and in the UK. So first I went and started looking at documentaries in Vimeo, to see what kind of documentaries have already been done about tattoos and the tattoo community. I looked at:

This documentary called my attention because it is something I had never seen and it is an interesting case inside the tattoo community. So this made me think about how we can find this kind of people that have interesting back stories that link them to this community.

This documentary was an inspiration to see how to properly portray interviews and how to connect them to create a narrative and to tell a great story.  This was also a very movieng documentary that I really enjoyed.

This documentary was the one that gave us the most inspiration. It has interviews about the tattoo community in the same age gap. It was inspiring visually, structure and concept wise.

After that I did some research about the statistics around tattoos and tattooed people and this is what I found:
  • It’s estimated that about one in five of the UK population as a whole is tattooed and this figure rises to one in three for young adults. (A. Proud, 2015)
  • Historic studies have demonstrated that individuals with visible tattoos can be perceived negatively and elicit expectations of criminality or dishonesty. (A. Richards, 2011)
  • According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), tattoo removal is on the rise …..The number of tattoo removal procedures in the U.S. reached 45,224 in 2013 compared to 40,801 procedures in 2011. (J. Caba, 2014)

“A recent Harris Interactive poll asked 2,016 adults in the United States if they currently had a tattoo and, if so, what was their reasoning behind the tattoos:
  • 25% of the respondents admitted their tattoo makes them feel rebellious
  • 3 /10 said their ink makes them feel sexy
  • 21% said their tattoo made them feel attractive or strong
  • 16% said it was a spiritual thing”
  • 86% said they had never regretted their decision to get a tattoo, but that thought may change as they get older.”
( J. Caba, 2014)

This will bring some insight on what our documentary can look like and what the structure can be constructed as.
